Desa Gym at Potato Head : Training at One of Bali’s Most Recognised Hotels

Desa Potato Head is no stranger to international recognition. The Seminyak creative village was ranked No. 18 in The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2025, placing it among the top hotels in the world, and was also named the winner of the Eco Hotel Award 2025. The property has built its reputation around a different take on hospitality, bringing together design, music, food, art, culture and sustainability under one roof. But there is another side to Desa that is worth exploring if you are someone who likes to keep training while travelling: Desa Gym. Located on the first floor of the hotel, the gym gives guests a proper space to maintain their training during their stay in Bali. It is not the biggest hotel gym you will come across, but the equipment selection is well considered, particularly for guests who prefer strength and conditioning over a basic treadmill-and-dumbbell setup.

A Well-Equipped Hotel Gym

Walk into Desa Gym and you’ll find a range of cardio and conditioning equipment, including a curved treadmill, rowing machines, AirBikes and SkiErgs. The strength and functional training setup is equally useful. There is a selection of barbells and weight plates, dumbbells, benches and plyometric boxes for exercises such as box jumps. The gym also has training balls, a push tank for strength and conditioning work, and a boxing bag for guests who want to add some striking to their session. Together, the equipment gives guests plenty of options for a proper workout, whether you’re looking to maintain your regular strength programme, get a conditioning session in, or simply train before heading out for the day. For travellers who don’t want their training routine to completely disappear while on holiday, it’s a considerably more capable setup than what you might expect from a hotel gym.

Turning the Desa Into a Fitness Playground

What many people may not know is that Desa’s fitness offering extends beyond the gym itself. The hotel also runs a small schedule of coached workouts, giving guests the opportunity to train as part of a group rather than simply working out independently. On Tuesday at 8:45 AM, Potato Head Athletic Training (P.H.A.T) focuses on building cardiovascular fitness, strengthening the core and conditioning the body through an intense collective workout. The session is designed to challenge participants and push their overall fitness. At 9:30 AM, the Tuesday schedule continues with Boxing. The high-intensity session combines conditioning with basic boxing skills, with coaches focusing on stamina, strength, coordination and technique. Then on Saturday at 8:30 AM, there is Desa Workout, a total-body session that takes a less conventional approach to where you actually train. but the most interesting part of Desa’s fitness programme. Rather than keeping every workout inside a dedicated studio or gym, Desa Workout uses the hotel itself as part of the training environment. A session can incorporate beachside stretches, stair sprints and strength exercises around the pool. It makes the workout feel less like a conventional group fitness class and more like exploring the property through movement. The approach also makes sense for Desa. The hotel was designed as a creative village rather than a conventional resort, with its architecture, open spaces and beachfront location forming a significant part of the experience. The workout classes make use of that environment rather than keeping guests inside a single room. It is also a good option for people of different fitness levels, with the Saturday Desa Workout welcoming all levels.

Fitness Rather Than Wellness

Desa Potato Head has a much broader wellness offering, including yoga, meditation, breathwork and other wellness experiences. The World’s 50 Best Hotels also highlights the hotel’s wider range of wellness programming. But the gym and workout classes represent a different side of the property. This is about training, strength, conditioning, cardio, boxing and functional movement,  rather than simply relaxation or recovery. For guests who want to stay active while in Bali, Desa offers both the equipment to train independently and the option to join coached sessions. And perhaps most importantly, the fitness programme doesn’t feel completely detached from the hotel itself.

At Desa, even a workout can become part of the experience of staying there.
