From strength training and Pilates to running, padel and MMA, Canggu offers no shortage of ways to stay active. With so many fitness options around the neighborhood, it’s easy to keep trying new workouts and pushing personal limits. But what happens when the body starts pushing back? For Lingga, this is a community he’s known since before Canggu became the fitness hub it is today. He opened his Griya Physiotherapy clinic in Berawa in 2018, and over the years, his work has given him a perspective on how the neighbourhood trains, moves and sometimes gets injured.
What Canggu’s Fitness Habits Look Like on the Treatment Table

Lingga sees a predominantly foreign clientele, with both men and women coming to his Berawa clinic. The complaints he encounters often reflect the sports and workouts that have become part of everyday life in Canggu. For runners, knee pain and shin splints are among the common issues he sees. MMA practitioners may come in with knee injuries involving ligaments, while boxers experience wrist problems from the demands of striking. Padel players, meanwhile, can develop tennis elbow and knee complaints. In the gym, lower-back pain, shoulder discomfort and neck pain are recurring concerns. Different sports place different demands on the body, but Lingga points to several common contributing factors: overuse, poor technique, inadequate warm-ups and insufficient strength training.
It’s a reminder that being active doesn’t automatically mean training smart. Increasing running mileage too quickly, repeating high-intensity sessions without enough recovery or playing a sport regularly without preparing the body for its demands can all contribute to physical problems. The goal isn’t to train less, but to train with greater awareness. Building strength, managing training loads and allowing adequate recovery can help people stay active and continue doing the sports they enjoy.
Building Griya Physiotherapy Clinic Through Word of Mouth

While Canggu’s fitness industry has grown rapidly, Lingga has taken a quieter approach to building his business. His clinic sits in a residential neighbourhood in Berawa, away from the main commercial strips. Rather than relying on a high-profile location or aggressive promotion, the practice has grown organically, largely through recommendations from satisfied clients. Today, the clinic has three treatment beds and employs three Indonesian physiotherapists. The space is equipped with resistance bands, treadmills, a stationary bike, barbells and a pull-up bar, supporting an approach that combines hands-on treatment with movement and rehabilitation. Manual therapy remains central to Lingga’s practice, helping clients work towards recovery and better physical performance. One treatment that has become something of his signature is dry needling. Often a love-it-or-hate-it experience for clients, the technique uses fine needles inserted into targeted muscle tissue and may be used as part of treatment for certain musculoskeletal conditions.
The clinic also stocks kinesiology tape, another tool commonly used to complement rehabilitation and support movement.
Growing With Canggu’s Fitness Community
Having built his clinic through word of mouth since 2018, Lingga is looking towards the next stage of the business: growing the team and bringing more physiotherapists on board. For him, growth isn’t just about expanding a clinic. It’s also about continuing to serve a community whose fitness habits and interests have evolved over the years. As more people take up new sports and training routines, understanding recovery and looking after the body become just as relevant as finding the next workout. Alongside treatment, Lingga also advises clients on their recovery, helping them better understand their physical concerns and what they can do to support their return to activity. In a neighbourhood with so many ways to move, his message is a simple one: staying active isn’t only about showing up for the next session. It’s also about understanding your body, addressing problems early and building habits that allow you to keep doing what you enjoy.
For Lingga, it’s a journey that began in Berawa in 2018, and one he hopes to continue by growing his team and supporting more of Canggu’s active community.
